Follow the below steps to play Chowka Bara
(also known as Katte Mane, Ashta Chamma,
Gatta Mane, Chakka, Pakidakali, Daayum,
Kavidi Kali, Kach kangri, Changa po, Cheeta)
Obtain a 5 House Chowka Bara set, which consists of a 5x5 block board. Each player, up to four, has a home block marked as ⓐ and four pawns.
Players take turns rolling the kavade set, which consists of four cowrie shells. The number of humps (0s) and mouths (1s) determine the player’s move. A mouth denotes 1, and a hump denotes 0. If all four shells show mouths, it’s a Chowka (4), and if all show humps, it’s a Baara (8).
Based on the kavade roll, the player moves a chosen pawn anticlockwise along the perimeter. The pawn enters the inner squares through ⓒ, to the left of the home square, after "taking out" an opponent's pawn. If multiple turns are earned (from rolling 4 or 8), multiple pawns can move.
If two pawns of a player are in the same block, they can be “toughened” (gatti) by rolling a 2. Until toughened, they’re “tollu” pawns and move forward only by 1 block for every 2 rolled. Opponent’s pawns cannot surpass toughened pawns unless they’re toughened themselves.
The first player to get all four pawns into the center block ⓑ wins.
